About reviews on nGaming:
1. Standard of writing.
In years past we were a little more lenient with regards to the quality of writing when considering whether we should publish a reader review, and if you look back to 2004 or earlier you may find some very brief reviews with lacklustre use of the English language. Now nGaming has grown into a much larger and more professional website, we require the standard of writing of contributed content to be much higher. Review and preview content should be grammatically correct, relevant to the game, and we encourage contributors to think about what a reader actually wants to know about a game. Although the editorial team will correct spelling mistakes, we encourage contributors to spell check their work before submitting it. As we are a UK-centric website, review content should be written in British English.
2. Length of review.
Although the number of actual points you can make will vary depending on the game, we ask that the reviews are a minimum of 500 words in length. If there really is very little to be said about the game and you can’t reach this mark, please still submit your review with the lower word count rather than keep repeating comments you have already made.
3. Screenshots and other images.
At the current time, the ability to upload screenshots and other images relevant to a review is only available to the editorial team. If you would like to include screenshots for a game within your review or preview, let us know using our contact form. Please note we will only publish screenshots that meet the following criteria:
- Screenshots may not contain pornographical content.
- Screenshots may not have another games website's watermark.
- Screenshots must be full size (the same number of pixels wide and tall as the game runs at).
We will create thumbnail sized screenshots from the full size original, and in most cases will add a watermark with the text “ngaming.co.uk”.
Allowing other nGaming users to comment on your p/review:
When submitting your review, you may notice an advanced option asking whether you would like to allow comments to be made by other nGaming users in follow-up to your review. In most cases, other users make constructive comments; however on rare occasions some moron will troll the nGaming website posting idiotic crap. If you’re thick-skinned enough not to care about this, we encourage you to allow comments to be made, otherwise we advise you not to activate this feature.
Perks of being a regular review contributor:
Regular contributors to nGaming are greatly appreciated, and we try to give as many incentives as possible. Some examples of such incentives include:
1: Game review and preview code.
nGaming regularly receives copies of games to be reviewed and/or previewed. UK-based contributors with good writing abilities may get the opportunity to play these games for the purpose of p/reviewing them, and in many cases will be able to keep the game.
2: Press events.
Many games publishers have invited representatives of nGaming to attend press events. Most of these events are special days where journalists can meet the game deveopers and get the opportunity to play an upcoming game, but we've also had our fair share of invites to (free bar) launch parties for games and consoles. Regular contributors may get the opportunity to attend these events.
3: A career in the world of gaming.
We know, partially because of our server access logs, and partially because they tell us, that games developers and publishers all over the world read the reviews and previews on the nGaming website. If you're considering a career in making games, or even just being a games journalist, writing content for nGaming is a great way to get contacts within the industry and to demonstrate your knowledge of gaming and/or your talents as a writer.
4: Privileges within the nGaming website.
Naturally this will mean much more to some than it will to others, but regularly contributing to nGaming will likely lead to you being given the chance to have a greater influence on the running of the website. This can mean becoming a forum and/or comments moderator, or could mean having your ideas for new features implemented.
Politics:
One might not think this would come up in game reviewing, but it often does. Please do not use nGaming to make any political statements. Although perhaps to you anyone that doesn’t share your opinion is evil, not everyone will share your views and we do not wish to exclude any demographic from enjoying our website.
Now if after reading all that you still want to write a p/review, head on over to our review submission form!
