TimeSplitters: Future Perfect Review

With two TimeSplitters games in the past, I was looking forward to seeing whether Future Perfect could continue the excellent track record set by its predecessors. To my delight, I found it could.

The game picks up where TimeSplitters 2 left off. While a lot of gamers were disappointed that TimeSplitters 2 didn't have much of a storyline to speak of, Future Perfect more than makes up for that. The story is engrossing and a pleasure to play.
With such a vast improvement to the Story mode, I kind of expected Arcade mode to be a big flop, but what a nice surprise. New levels and weapons ensured that I spent a few hours in front of my PS2.

The graphics are very impressive, as we've come to expect from the TimeSplitters series. Although I will point out that in this game, everything seems a little less cartoon-ish and a lot more realistic.
The sound only adds to the realistic feel, because the guns actually sound like guns, most characters have their own voices and each level has a vast array of background noises like birds twittering or the sound of running water in a stream. The music gets a little irritating sometimes, but on the whole it's very good.

Replayability is often a problem with shoot-em-ups, but I'm glad to say that Future Perfect isn't a game you'll play for a few days and then put away, never to be played again. There are fourteen arcade modes and plenty of leagues and challenges that need to be completed to unlock all the extra bonuses.

In short, TimeSplitters: Future Perfect lives up to its name. It may not be perfect, but it's so close that you'd believe it was. A vital addition to any PS2 gamer's collection.
